How do you import a motorcycle from the USA to the UK?

To import a motorcycle from the USA you pay UK import VAT of 20% on the total cost, shipping included, plus customs duty of 6% or 8% depending on engine size, because the UK tariff lists no preference rate for the United States. A bike under 10 years old with no European approval needs an MSVA test, while an older one is exempt according to the DVSA manual. For Harley-Davidson and Indian riders the real hurdle is usually proof of the date of manufacture.
- Duty: 6% over 250cc, 8% up to 250cc.
- VAT: 20% on the bike, shipping, extras and the duty.
- Under 10 years old, no European Certificate of Conformity: MSVA.
- Over 10 years old: exempt per the DVSA manual, but DVLA may inspect.
- NOVA: within 14 days of arrival.

How much duty and VAT do you pay on a motorbike from the USA?
You may read online that bikes pay 10% duty. The UK Trade Tariff, under heading 8711 (motorcycles), lists 8% for bikes up to 250cc, scooters included, and 6% above 250cc. It shows a 0% preference for plenty of countries, but not for the United States. A Harley-Davidson or Indian big twin sits far above 250cc, so it lands in the 6% band.
VAT is 20%. gov.uk says it is charged on the total cost of the vehicle plus accessories bought with it, delivery and extra charges, and the customs duty. So the shipping bill and the duty both go into the figure VAT is worked out on. Both are paid at the border through the import declaration, which gov.uk says a shipping company or customs agent makes for a private importer.
A preference rate follows where the bike was made, not where you bought it. If a bike was bought in the USA but built somewhere else, send us the frame number and we will look at it before you pay.
Does a US bike need an MSVA test?
If it is under 10 years old and has no European Certificate of Conformity, yes. gov.uk says to apply for MSVA, Motorcycle Single Vehicle Approval, for a two or three wheeled vehicle. The test is for vehicles under 10 years old that have not been registered in the UK and have no European or provisional UK type approval.
The DVSA fee page (updated 20 August 2026) gives £85 in working hours and £109 outside them for a solo motorcycle, with the test taking about 60 minutes. The DVSA manual covers silencer marking, stationary noise limits by engine size and a petrol CO limit of 4.5%, and the MSVA and Partial MSVA pages mention a left-dipping headlamp and a speedometer in mph. A DVSA test station does the test and a garage does any changes. We do neither. We handle the paperwork around them.
One warning from the MSVA page: a seriously damaged bike cannot be registered or taxed, and the money spent on approval is not refunded. Ask about the bike's history before you pay for anything.
Send the make, model and year and we start from there.
What if the bike is over 10 years old?
The DVSA MSVA inspection manual (revision 6, 15 April 2025) lists vehicles over ten years old as exempt from the Minister's Approval Certificate. So the manual says an older bike skips MSVA. That line is in the manual, not on gov.uk's list of exemptions from vehicle approval, and gov.uk says DVLA might inspect the vehicle.
An older bike with rebuilt or replaced parts is a case by case question. Ask us before you buy.
Why is the date of manufacture the real problem?
An exemption by age only works if you can prove the age. gov.uk says DVLA wants the original foreign registration certificate and that you will not get it back. If you do not have it, DVLA might accept other proof of the manufacture date.
Might, not will. Riders on owners' forums describe DVLA turning down US imports for a missing date of manufacture, and asking which dating letter it accepts. If you need a letter, we obtain it.
If age or identity stays in doubt, gov.uk says DVLA issues Q registration numbers to such vehicles and that the vehicle has to pass a type approval process. Our guide to bikes with no papers and proof of age covers that route.
What papers should come with the bike?
For registration gov.uk names original documents only: proof of approval where one applies, evidence of the collection date such as the supplier's invoice, and the original foreign registration certificate. What your US ownership papers count as is something we judge bike by bike, so tell us what documents come with the bike before you buy. It is a lot cheaper than finding out afterwards.
Who arranges the shipping, and what are the deadlines?
Getting the bike to a UK port is the seller's or a shipper's job. Deregistration, any export plates and the export paperwork in the USA are handled by the seller. If you need it, we arrange the transport to the UK, and we handle the customs declaration, NOVA and the DVLA paperwork.
Once the bike lands you have 14 days to tell HMRC through NOVA. gov.uk says you may be fined if you are late. DVLA will not register the bike until NOVA is processed and the VAT and duty are paid. DVLA's registration fee is £55 plus vehicle tax (gov.uk import guide, updated 30 September 2026), and the V5C can take up to 6 weeks to arrive. Until then gov.uk says you can be prosecuted for using the bike on a public road, unless you are driving it to a pre-booked MOT or vehicle approval test.
What we do for you
Before you pay, tell us the make, model, year, frame number and the documents that come with the bike, and we tell you what the UK side involves. We make the customs import declaration, work out and pay the VAT and duty, and submit NOVA. We prepare every DVLA form: you just sign and post. We do not buy, sell or inspect bikes, and we do not say which bike to buy.
Quick answers
Do I need to have a US bike tested to register it in the UK?
If it is under 10 years old with no European Certificate of Conformity, yes, an MSVA test. If it is over 10 years old the DVSA manual says it is exempt, though DVLA may inspect.
DVLA rejected my US import for a missing date of manufacture. What now?
gov.uk says DVLA might accept other proof of the manufacture date in place of the original foreign registration certificate. Nothing is guaranteed, so send us the rejection letter and the papers you have.
Is the duty different for a small US bike?
Yes. Up to 250cc the tariff lists 8%, above 250cc it lists 6%. VAT is 20% on both.
Can I ride the bike to the test?
gov.uk allows driving an unregistered vehicle on a public road only to a pre-booked MOT or vehicle approval test.
