How do you import a Ducati from Italy to the UK?

Short answer

A Ducati bought in Italy pays 20% UK import VAT and customs duty of 6% (over 250cc) or 8% (up to 250cc), and the duty falls to 0% only if the bike was built in the EU and you can prove it. So the first question is not the price, it is where that particular Ducati was built. Then come the import declaration for the bike, NOVA within 14 days, approval where it applies, a UK MOT if the bike is over 3 years old, and DVLA registration for £55.

At a glance
  • Italian plates and a Bologna badge do not decide the duty: the factory where the bike was built does.
  • On a €14,000 Ducati with £450 transport: £2,490.34 of tax if the 0% is proved, £3,386.86 at 6%.
  • Send us the frame number before you pay, so the origin is checked while you can still walk away.
  • A Ducati on Italian plates cannot be ridden on UK roads if you live here.

Is a Ducati from Italy duty free in the UK?

Only if it was built in the EU and you can prove it. The UK Trade Tariff gives 0% as a preference for goods originating in the European Union, and origin follows the factory, not the number plate or the dealer's address. Ducati's home is Bologna, but the company does not build everything there: Ducati Motor Thailand held the grand opening of a new motorcycle manufacturing plant in Rayong, Thailand, on 5 April 2024, according to the industry news service MarkLines. A Ducati built in Thailand and sold in Italy pays the full duty, because the tariff lists no preference for it.

We cannot tell you from the advert which factory built your bike. Send us the frame number and the Italian papers before you pay and we look at the origin side. If you prove EU origin, the importer needs the exporter's statement on origin or their own knowledge that the bike is originating, and gov.uk also allows a claim after import within 3 years.

How much UK tax do you pay on a Ducati from Italy?

Start from the price in euros, converted at HMRC's monthly rate: for October 2026, £1 = €1.1665. A Ducati bought for €14,000 is £12,001.71. Add £450 for transport (an example, not a typical price) and the value for customs is £12,451.71.

Example: €14,000 Ducati from Italy, £450 transport (October 2026 rate)

BikeDutyVATTotal tax
Built in the EU, origin proved£0£2,490.34£2,490.34
Over 250cc, no proof£747.10£2,639.76£3,386.86
Up to 250cc, no proof£996.14£2,689.57£3,685.71

VAT is worked out on the value plus any duty, so it rises when duty applies. The Italian 22% IVA you avoid by exporting the bike is replaced by UK import VAT, not added on top of it. Full rates in our duty and VAT guide.

Which Italian papers should come with the Ducati?

The registration papers and the invoice. Italy's transport ministry, the MIT, says the Documento Unico di Circolazione e di Proprietà has been issued instead of the carta di circolazione and the certificato di proprietà since 1 October 2021, and older papers stay valid until the next operation that calls for a DU, such as a change of owner. So a Ducati sold recently may come with one document and an older one with two. Our Italy guide goes through them.

For a Ducati the useful extra is any paperwork that shows where and when it was built. DVLA asks for the original foreign registration certificate to show when the vehicle was made, and keeps it, so photograph every page first.

Does an imported Ducati need approval in the UK?

Under 10 years old and first registered in the EU, gov.uk asks for a European Certificate of Conformity, and the bike also needs a headlamp that dips for riding on the left and a speedometer that reads in mph. The routes are GB conversion IVA from the VCA (£100) or a Partial MSVA from the DVSA (£12), and the official pages do not say which DVLA prefers, so ask us before you choose. We obtain the Certificate of Conformity if you need one. Over 10 years old, the VCA's motorcycle form says the bike is exempt from its procedure and points you to DVLA. Details in our MSVA and approval guide.

Older Ducatis are a case by case question. The 5% VAT rate for old vehicles needs three conditions at once, and the tariff heading does not name motorcycles, so we confirm the bike before anyone promises it.

What about the MOT and riding it home?

A bike over 3 years old needs a UK MOT before DVLA registers it; the maximum fee for a motorcycle is £29.65 on gov.uk. An Italian revisione is not accepted instead. Before registration the bike may go on a public road only to a pre-booked MOT or approval test. DVLA's leaflet INF106 says a UK resident must not drive a vehicle displaying foreign number plates and advises transporting the vehicle from the port, so plan a van, not a ride home.

Deregistration in Italy, any export plates and the export paperwork are handled by the seller. If you need it, we arrange the transport to the UK, and we handle the customs declaration, NOVA and the DVLA registration route.

What we do for you

Before you pay, send us the advert, the frame number and photos of every Italian registration paper. We tell you what the UK side involves for that bike, including the origin question that decides the duty. We lodge the customs import declaration, work out and pay the VAT and any duty, and submit NOVA within the 14 days, and we prepare every DVLA form: you just sign and post. We do not test or modify bikes, and we do not buy, sell, inspect or recommend them.

Quick answers

Is a Ducati bought in Italy always built in Italy?

No. Ducati also builds motorcycles in Thailand, so the plates and the seller's address do not tell you the origin. The frame number and the papers are where we start.

Do I pay Italian IVA and UK VAT on the same Ducati?

No. The UK charges 20% import VAT on the value of the bike plus delivery, extra charges and any duty. Paying Italian IVA to the seller does not cancel it.

How soon must HMRC be told after the Ducati arrives?

Within 14 days, through NOVA, with the invoice if you bought the bike in the last 6 months.

Duty, VAT, the MSVA fee, the DVLA fee and road tax are paid by you directly to the authorities. We are a private customs clearance agent, not affiliated with HMRC, the DVLA or the DVSA.
