How do you import a motorbike from Italy to the UK?

Short answer

A motorbike brought from Italy pays 20% UK import VAT and customs duty of 6% (over 250cc) or 8% (up to 250cc), reduced to 0% only when you can prove the bike was built in the EU. From the Italian seller you need the registration papers, the libretto or the newer Documento Unico, and the invoice. On the UK side come the customs declaration, NOVA within 14 days, approval where it applies, a UK MOT if the bike is over 3 years old, and DVLA registration for £55.

At a glance
  • Italian papers: the Documento Unico di Circolazione e di Proprietà on recent paperwork, or the older carta di circolazione (the libretto) with the certificato di proprietà.
  • On an €8,000 bike with £450 transport: £1,461.62 of tax with proof of EU origin, up to £2,163.20 without.
  • The Italian revisione is not a UK MOT.
  • Living in the UK? A bike on Italian plates cannot be ridden here.

Which Italian documents come with the bike?

It depends on when the bike last changed hands. Italy's transport ministry, the MIT, says the Documento Unico di Circolazione e di Proprietà (DU) replaces the carta di circolazione and the certificato di proprietà for vehicles entered on the PRA register, and that since 1 October 2021 the DU is issued instead of both. Papers issued before that date stay valid until the next operation that calls for a DU, such as a change of owner. So a bike sold recently may come with one DU, and an older one with a libretto and a certificato di proprietà.

Ask the seller for every original, together with the fattura from a dealer or a signed bill of sale from a private seller. DVLA asks for the original foreign registration certificate to show when the vehicle was made, and keeps it. The official pages do not say which Italian paper DVLA keeps, so photograph all of them before anything is posted.

What should you check on the papers before you pay?

That the frame number on the paperwork matches the one stamped on the bike, and that the seller is the person named on it. The frame number is the one that goes on the customs declaration, NOVA and the DVLA application, so a mismatch stops everything. If the bike was first registered in another country before it reached Italy, tell us before you pay, because DVLA wants the date the bike was made.

How much does a motorbike from Italy cost in UK tax?

Work it out from the price in euros, converted at HMRC's monthly rate: for October 2026, £1 = €1.1665. As an example, a bike bought for €8,000 is £6,858.12. Add £450 for transport (an example, not a typical price) and the value for customs is £7,308.12.

Example: €8,000 bike from Italy, £450 transport (October 2026 rate)

BikeDutyVATTotal tax
Built in the EU, origin proved£0£1,461.62£1,461.62
Over 800cc, no proof£438.49£1,549.32£1,987.81
125 to 250cc, no proof£584.65£1,578.55£2,163.20

VAT is worked out on the value plus any duty, so it rises when duty applies. Italian IVA paid to the seller does not cancel the UK import VAT. Full rates in our duty and VAT guide.

Is a bike bought in Italy duty free?

Only if it was built in the EU and you can prove it. The UK Trade Tariff gives 0% as a preference for goods originating in the European Union, so the factory counts, not the Italian plates or the badge on the tank. A bike built outside the EU and sold in Italy pays 6% or 8%. The importer needs the exporter's statement on origin or their own knowledge that the bike is originating; gov.uk also allows a claim after import, within 3 years. Send us the frame number before you pay and we look at the origin side.

Does an Italian bike need approval in the UK?

Under 10 years old and first registered in the EU, gov.uk asks for a European Certificate of Conformity. Because the bike was built for riding on the right, it also needs a headlamp that dips to the left and a speedometer in mph. The routes are GB conversion IVA from the VCA (£100) or a Partial MSVA from the DVSA (£12), and the official pages do not say which DVLA prefers: ask us before you choose. Over 10 years old, the VCA's motorcycle form says the bike is exempt from its procedure and points you to DVLA. We obtain the Certificate of Conformity if you need one. More in our MSVA and approval guide.

Is an Italian revisione the same as a UK MOT?

No. The revisione is Italy's periodic inspection and it has no value in the UK. A bike over 3 years old needs a UK MOT before DVLA will register it; the maximum fee for a motorcycle is £29.65 on gov.uk. Before registration the bike may go on a public road only to a pre-booked MOT or approval test.

Can you ride an Italian registered bike in the UK?

Not if you live here. DVLA's import leaflet INF106 says: "If you're a UK resident you must not drive a vehicle displaying foreign number plates", and advises transporting the vehicle from the port rather than riding it, and keeping it off the road until it is registered, taxed and insured. If you are moving from Italy to live in the UK, our guide to bringing a bike back or moving with it covers the relief that may apply.

What happens after the bike arrives?

HMRC must be told through the NOVA notice to HMRC within 14 days, with the invoice if you bought the bike in the last 6 months. If you bought it longer ago, gov.uk asks instead for a current valuation carried out in person in the UK by a garage, dealership or other recognised business. DVLA registers the bike only once NOVA is processed and the VAT and any duty are paid; then come the £55 fee, the vehicle tax and a V5C that can take up to 6 weeks.

Deregistration in Italy, any export plates and the export paperwork are handled by the seller. If you need it, we arrange the transport to the UK, and we handle the customs declaration, NOVA and the registration paperwork for DVLA.

What we do for you

Before you pay, send us the advert, the frame number and photos of every Italian registration paper. We tell you what the UK side involves for that bike. We lodge the customs import declaration, work out and pay the VAT and any duty, and submit NOVA, and we prepare every DVLA form (the V55/5 above all): you just sign and post. If you need the bike moved from Italy, we arrange the transport through partners. We do not test or modify bikes, and we do not buy, sell, inspect or recommend them.

Quick answers

What is the Documento Unico?

It is the single Italian vehicle document that, according to the MIT, replaces the carta di circolazione and the certificato di proprietà for vehicles on the PRA register. It has been issued instead of both since 1 October 2021.

Do I pay Italian IVA and UK VAT on the same bike?

Paying IVA in Italy does not remove the UK import VAT. The UK charges 20% on the value of the bike plus delivery, extra charges and any duty.

Is an Italian revisione accepted instead of an MOT?

No. A bike over 3 years old needs a UK MOT before DVLA registration, with a maximum fee of £29.65.

Duty, VAT, the MSVA fee, the DVLA fee and road tax are paid by you directly to the authorities. We are a private customs clearance agent, not affiliated with HMRC, the DVLA or the DVSA.
