How do you import a motorbike from Poland to the UK?

To bring a bike from Poland into Great Britain you need the Polish registration certificate, the dowód rejestracyjny, and a bill of sale from the seller, then a UK customs declaration, 20% import VAT and customs duty of 0%, 6% or 8%, NOVA within 14 days and the DVLA registration. On a bike bought for 30,000 zloty with £450 transport, the UK tax is £1,242.60 if you can prove the bike was made in the EU, and £1,689.94 if it is over 250cc and you cannot.
- From the seller: the dowód rejestracyjny and a written sale agreement.
- VAT: 20% in the UK on the price in pounds, plus delivery, extras and any duty.
- Duty: 0% with proof the bike was made in the EU, otherwise 8% up to 250cc or 6% above.
- Then: NOVA within 14 days, approval where it applies, DVLA fee £55.

Which Polish papers do you ask the seller for?
Ask for the dowód rejestracyjny, the Polish vehicle registration certificate, and a written sale agreement, the umowa kupna-sprzedaży. The Polish government's own deregistration page lists the sale agreement as the document that proves a vehicle was sold abroad, so a seller who has sold to a foreign buyer before will know what it is. The same page does not mention the older vehicle card, the karta pojazdu, so if the seller has one, ask for it too and send us a photo.
Gov.uk tells you to send DVLA the original foreign registration certificate, and says you will not get it back. If you do not have it, you send DVLA a letter explaining why, and DVLA might accept other proof of the manufacture date, such as a letter from the manufacturer or an enthusiast club. Which Polish papers DVLA keeps is not spelled out on the official pages, so do not let the seller keep anything until you have told us what you have.
The sale agreement matters twice. HMRC asks for an invoice or bill of sale when you tell it about the bike through the NOVA notice to HMRC, if you bought it in the last 6 months. Without one, gov.uk asks for a current valuation carried out in person in the UK, which is a much longer road.
How much is the UK tax on a bike bought in zloty?
Work it out from the price in zloty, converted at HMRC's monthly rate: for November 2026, £1 = 5.2056 zloty. A bike bought for 30,000 zloty is £5,763.02. Add £450 for transport (an example, not a typical price) and the value for customs is £6,213.02.
Example: 30,000 zloty bike from Poland, £450 transport (November 2026 rate)
| Bike | Duty | VAT | Total tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Built in the EU, origin proved | £0 | £1,242.60 | £1,242.60 |
| Over 250cc, no proof | £372.78 | £1,317.16 | £1,689.94 |
Gov.uk says import VAT is charged on the total cost, plus delivery, any extra charges and customs duty, so it rises when duty applies. Polish VAT paid to the seller does not cancel the UK import VAT. The rate changes every month, so we re-run the sum on the day. Full rates in our duty and VAT guide.
Send the make, model and year and we start from there.
Is a bike bought in Poland duty free?
Maybe not, and where you bought it is not the test. The UK Trade Tariff lists 8% for motorcycles up to 250cc and 6% above, with a 0% preference for the European Union. That 0% follows where the bike was made, not where it was sold or registered. A bike on Polish plates can have been built anywhere in the world, and a bike built in the EU keeps its 0% wherever it was sold.
Gov.uk says the importer needs a statement on origin from the exporter, or their own knowledge that the product is originating. A claim can also be made after import, within 3 years, with valid proof. Send us the frame number and the advert and we look at the origin side before you pay.
Does a Polish bike need an approval test in the UK?
It depends on age and paperwork. Gov.uk says a vehicle registered in the EU needs a European Certificate of Conformity to show it has approval. If the bike is set up for right-hand traffic only, there are two official routes to show a left-dipping headlamp and a speedometer in mph: GB conversion IVA through the VCA (£100) or a Partial MSVA through the DVSA (£12). The Partial MSVA is voluntary, so you cannot ride the bike to the test. Which route DVLA prefers is not stated on the official pages, so ask us before you buy. Our guide to MSVA and approval has the details.
Gov.uk says a vehicle first registered or manufactured more than 10 years ago might not need approval, and DVLA might still inspect. Treat that as the start of a conversation with DVLA, not the end.
What happens after the bike reaches the UK?
You must tell HMRC within 14 days through NOVA, and gov.uk says you may be fined if you are late. DVLA will not register the bike until NOVA is processed and VAT and duty are paid. The DVLA registration fee is £55 plus vehicle tax, and the V5C can take up to 6 weeks to arrive. Gov.uk says you can be prosecuted for using the bike on a public road before you finish these steps, unless you are driving it to a pre-booked MOT or vehicle approval test.
Deregistration in Poland, any export plates and the export paperwork are handled by the seller. If you need it, we arrange the transport to the UK, and we handle the customs declaration, NOVA and the registration paperwork for DVLA.
What we do for you
Before you pay, send us the advert, the make, model, year, frame number and photos of the dowód rejestracyjny and the sale agreement. We tell you what the UK side involves. We make the customs import declaration, work out and pay the VAT and duty, and submit NOVA. We prepare every DVLA form, the V55/5 included: you just sign and post. We do not test or modify bikes, we do not buy, sell or inspect them, and we do not say which bike to buy.
Quick answers
What is the dowód rejestracyjny?
It is the Polish vehicle registration certificate. Ask the seller for it and send us photos before you pay.
Do I pay Polish VAT and UK VAT?
UK import VAT of 20% applies to a bike you import. How the seller's country treats its own VAT is a question for the seller.
Is a bike from Poland duty free?
Only if it was made in the EU and you can prove it. The country you bought it in does not decide the rate.
Can I ride a bike home from Poland and register it?
Gov.uk says you can be prosecuted for using it on a public road before the import steps are complete, unless you are driving it to a pre-booked MOT or vehicle approval test.
